I spent some time on the range at the traditions cub in Bryan today.
I worked again on the squaring of the club going backward in the swing which allows me to release the club through the ball. I worked on short wedges as always to warm up. The difference when i take the club back correctly is a slight brushing of the grass going forward and not deep divots. As i move through the clubs the divot remains shallow and not digging.
I also feel that when i release it properly my fingers feel they go down toward the ground as the club goes through the ball. This happens automatically and with out me forcing it at all. The club releases and the ball has a higher more penetrating flight than before. I know that i am able to control the distance with my wedges better swinging this way than the other way where it seemed that the ball would float and not go the same distance each time. I would also not be able to control the spin on the ball the other way, but with this new swing or motion i am able to control the spin by either the swing speed, the weight on my feet, or ball position. It is amazing the difference it the reaction of the ball. I tried this movement in the bunker and i have always been a chunk and run type of bunker player. With this movement i am able to put spin on the ball now when or if i need it. I am also able to loft the ball at different heights as well. This helps in controlling the distance of the shot when the spin is under better control. I am looking forward to working with this swing going forward and maybe i will be able to improve my short game to where it used to be years ago.
I have discovered that controlling the height and the spin is essential in controlling the distance in short shots.
I went out and played later that evening and hit all but one fairway and all but one green and had many opportunities for birdie. What i forgot to do is take my own advice and practice my putting twice as much as hitting the ball. That is what i will do next and work on putting.
On that note i have discovered that while putting i work best with my yes outside the line especially on short putts. When i realize that my eyes are inside the line i have difficulty getting the ball on the correct line and therefore don’t hit it the right distance.
The little things that cause us to score poorly.
Remember putting can make all the difference. And always practice your short game.
