May 15-16 th Trip to Crown Colony in Lufkin, Tx
I wanted to thank Frank Pickens for the wonderful invitation to Play Crown Colony in Lufkin, Texas again this year. He so graciously invites a group of 20 players officially know at the Walden on Lake Conroe club as the “Old Dawgs” to play at crown colony every year. I by chance was invited last year and got another invite this year so i must not have pissed anyone off yet.
Crown Colony is a gem hidden in the deep part of east Texas designed by Von Haggey – Devlin the same designers that designed Walden. The players ranged in handicap from a 2 to 22. We were parked together by the leader of this infamous group Mr. Wilson. I also took a player from Traditions with me as well to see how he would enjoy the course. The format for play Tuesday was 2bb net. With my low handicap i didn’t help much but did participate in a few holes to help the team come in second and actually i won a skin as well. Fun was had by all and then Frank treated all the players to dinner at Ralph and Kacco’s. What a treat and what great conversation at the table. It is such a pleasure to be around such great men where you can relax and just enjoy the time together either at dinner, golf, or just having lunch in the mens grill.
Wednesday’s format was shamble and 2bb net. In this format i did help the team with my drives. Helping the other get a bit closer to the green on the first shot giving them the chance to get to the green in two and make par. I have to say it was fun watching my team on Wednesday play and make par after par. And yes a few birdies as well. We were fortunate to win Wednesday and come home with a little pocket cash.
Crown Colony was a great host and the course is in good condition. The greens were a bit slow however they had just had there big tournament just before and were letting the greens recuperate from skimming them down. They seemed to have had some nice rain through the spring to help the rough grow not that it was tall but there was a good stand of grass in the rough which is difficult to do considering the pine trees. The course was great and the food was good as well. I had their burger which was cooked exactly the way i wanted and curly fries. One of my team mates had the club sandwich and it looked wonderful as well with tater tots.
I don’t think any one left hungry in any case. If you want to go and have a nice time play a good golf course and enjoy some good food then try Crown Colony in Lufkin texas.
Here is the group at dinner Tuesday night as you can see not much talking and a great deal of eating.
