What i saw at the Masters
I have to say there were some amazing shots that were on display at the Masters. One thing I observed however was on the short shots in and around the greens.
What i noticed was the openness of the club face on all the shots around the greens by all players regardless of the shot they were trying to attempt. I didnt see a digging of the club by anyone around the green. There fore they had to have to clue face open to allow the bounce of the cub to react to the ground not allowing the edge to dig. Since i was not there i can only speculate as to why.
1. The grass and lies were so perfect it was not necessary to try or even attempt to go under the ball by digging.
2. Because of the grass and perfect lies, along with the speed of the greens soft shots were more the way to go then shots that come out hot with spin.
3. I also saw most of the players not wanting the ball to spin as much out of the bonkers unless it was a very delicate shot and it was an almost necessity to do so. Most wedged it out and let it roll to the hole. Different than on most courses that they play were they try and fly the ball the majority of the way and stop it on a dime. What i saw was the respect for the speed of the greens and the undulation of the greens.
4. It seemed the rough was a bit higher this year than in years past. Not a significant amount but when the grass is wet and the greens are at the sped of the Masters any amount is significant.
5. What i also saw was seasoned player scoring better than the new guys or first timers except for Finau. The reason is because at the Masters a yard can make all the difference in the world coming into the greens. And the seasoned players new the right place to miss where the ability to get it up and down was easier than possibly from the other side of the hole.
6. Congratulations to Freddie, and Berhard for making the cut and actually finishing near the top 30.
Finally,
Tiger, has to be pleased with the out come of the tournament. Placed in the top 30, made the cut all after back fusion not a year ago. I would think he would be ahead of schedule not that i have a direct line to his doctors. He was the greatest golfer for none the less a 6 year stretch from 1997-2002 that there was on the planet much less the tour. He has high expectations and rightly so but i would believe he has to be happy with just being out on the course and at the Masters playing against the best in the world and finishing in the top 30. I wish him luck o his return and his comeback. The golf world is a better place when he is playing.
357 days till opening day of the Masters i will be counting them down
